Steiner, specializing in making our Swiss Cheese the time honored way

The history of cheese making in Ohio all began with Steiner cheese, and continues today. In 1833 a young Swiss gentleman named Jacob Steiner immigrated to America, seeking the opportunities the new land had to offer. Armed with a deep faith in God, he and his wife settled in the Ohio Valley with little more than the family Bible and an old copper Swiss cheese kettle. Jacob would later reminisce that he chose the are because it reminded him so much of his old country-rolling hills, lush meadows and family run dairy farms nestled in the valleys.

Soon Jacob was busy doing what he loved best-making artisan style fine quality Swiss cheese. Word of his enterprise quickly spread which brought yet more dairy farmers and then more cheese makers to the area. By the turn of the century, central Ohio had become the Swiss cheese capital of America.

Nearly 175 years later, the vision of Jacob Steiner lives on today. Automation has enabled cheese factories to become larger and more efficient, producing their goods for much of the civilized world to enjoy. However, there are some, like Steiner cheese, who choose to remain "nestled in the valley", almost hidden, continuing to make their product the time honored, old-world style way. Steiners firmly believes there are some unique qualities to cheese making only a professional cheese maker can provide, and can never be duplicated by machines alone.
